Dentist Andrew German: From Judo Champion to Advocate for Health and Wellness

Florence, 2 August 2023 – Andrew Germandentist of Firenzepresident of the Italian Society of Zygomatic and Pterygoid Implantology, is a gold medalist in judo at the 2022 Medigames World Championships in Portugal and will soon be a champion at this year’s championships in Cartagena, Colombia, from 4 to 10 November.

“I was born in Naples and I started practicing this discipline when I was more or less 6 years old. I remember – says Tedesco – that my father took me swimming in a structure where many sports were practiced and every time I went away I passed in the area where it was practiced judo and I paused to spy. From there they understood that the passion was such that they had to change sports. So I started doing judo without stopping until the beginning of the university to do something else. A few years ago I resumed and last year I participated in the Medigames world championships, a sort of Olympics for health professions, doctors, dentists, biologists, etc. for all sports, worldwide and with extremely high quality. I won the gold medal, being the only Italian to participate in judo, beating level opponents from France, Morocco, Germany and a Brazilian in the final”.

Who are you supported by, who coaches you in preparation?

“I was accompanied by my two lifelong friends, Massimo Aresti and Leonardo Naldini, former wrestlers, who followed me meticulously in my preparation. It was all in Portugal. This year as a champion I will present myself at the next championships which will take place in Cartagena, Colombia from November 4th to 10th”.

You are a doctor. Can you tell us what are the important concepts of this health education system?

“An important message, the one that Medigames spreads, the importance of sport for health and, since it was an Olympics for health professions, it was the best opportunity to demonstrate that you are healthy by practicing sport even when you are no longer very young. Practically Ju-Do is a concept. Judo means “way of kindness”, because this discipline absolutely does not foresee the use of violence, there are no low blows but only techniques and holds to render the opponent harmless, immobilizing him… But with kindness! Training means reaching perfect knowledge of the spirit through attack-defense training, also to obtain physical-spiritual improvement”.

What are the benefits for children and older people?

“People who are no longer very young who practice judo have many benefits, both physical and spiritual. It is like a fitness method that burns calories, loses weight, by activating the metabolism, increasing muscles, improving breathing and circulation. It improves agility and balance because the aim of the judoka is to remain standing trying to knock down the opponent. I find judo very important for children, at the moment when bullying is also happening in schools, this discipline teaches that even in a self-defense sport you can leave violence aside, using methods and techniques that involve the spirit and balance more. But it also serves to increase self-esteem, helps to socialize and fight shyness, it increases concentration and digs into the spirit by bringing out the moral capacity of the boy. Practically reacting to bullying with politeness, kindness and strength… even of spirit”.
