Decoding Emmanuel Macron’s Sleep Habits: How Much Does the French President Really Sleep?

President of the Republic for more than six years, former minister and high-level banker, Emmanuel Macron has never really counted his hours. So how does the tenant of the Elysée manage his sleep, he who can quickly overwhelm the responsibilities and the files to be managed? We take stock, by cross-checking information distilled over the years.

In politics, it is difficult, if not impossible, to have a stable and balanced sleep pattern. This is even truer for heads of state, for whom the work almost never stops. A few years ago, François Hollande confided that he needed six hours of sleep per night to be fully functional, while Nicolas Sarkozy, ideally, slept 6:30 hours. What about Emmanuel Macron?

Emmanuel Macron, little sleeper… but how much?

Renowned among his collaborators for being a “night owl”, Macron sleeps very little when the times demand it. A few months ago, the Express also advanced a crazy figure:

He sleeps 3 to 4 hours a night.

The problem is that no human being can be functional with 3 hours of sleep, as all the specialists in the field confirm. Moreover, a close friend of the President confesses that if he is able to absorb an ultra-shortened night, he begins to show signs of weakness when they are linked. A human, in short… but still above the rest, as a relative slips:

I’ve known him since 2009. He sleeps very little, and maintains this pace effortlessly.

Very well known among ministers and his collaborators for text messages sent at all hours of the night, and in particular until 3 a.m., Macron, on the other hand, is not very early. He would rarely start his meetings before 9 a.m., where some great leaders are used to being early risers. A trend that is ultimately normal for those who love the night: “This President never sleeps”, whispered a minister on the sidelines of a summit in Lyon.

It should be noted that Emmanuel Macron himself has never hidden being a short sleeper. “I sleep little but I have always slept little, so it costs me very little,” he said to Laurent Delahousse a few years ago. A rhythm inherited from his years in finance, of which he painted an ultimately disturbing portrait during an exchange with Philippe Besson:

In investment banking, you go into battle, you stay late at night, you sacrifice your personal life, it’s bullshit by the way, you end up losing your discernment.

Since then, Macron seems to have learned a few lessons, even if the exercise of his mandate necessarily constrains him at a disjointed pace, and ultimately dangerous for health. But with an extraordinary job, extraordinary constraints…

As one of the smallest recent sleepers at the Elysee Palace, and even if he likes to maintain this mystique about his ability not to rest much, Emmanuel Macron is ultimately quite normal in his relationship to sleep. Moreover, a recent study had made it possible to establish that the great world leaders slept approximately 6 hours 30 per night, that is to say a few minutes less barely than the French average. Like what !
