The German Basketball Association has prematurely extended the contract with men’s national coach Gordon Herbert before the World Cup, which begins in two weeks, until after the 2025 European Championship. This was announced by association president Ingo Weiss on Thursday in a media round. “Gordie made himself known very quickly and said: He enjoys it and he wants it,” said Weiss, adding: “For me it’s important that we go a long way together.” According to Weiss, it cannot be ruled out that the 64-year-old Canadian will remain head coach for even longer: “If it’s up to me, we will continue to work together. At the end of the day, continuity brings success.”

Herbert took over the German team after the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo and surprisingly led them to bronze at the 2022 European Championships last year both preparation games. Qualification for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris should also be achieved in the coming months. Weiss also wanted the extension of the contract with the head coach before the highlight of the summer to be understood as “a sign for the team and the public”. One is completely convinced of the qualities of the veteran. “He’s also very popular with the team,” said Weiss. He had no other candidate for the job on the list: “For me it was not a question.”
