These statements provide for a controversial discussion. A user commented on the post: “Thank you Martina, if only more people with your reach had the courage.” Navratilova replies: “It’s really unbelievable how things got out of hand.”
The post, which has been shared and liked thousands of times, also contains many critical comments. One asks, “Do you really think allying with anti-trans fanatics will do you any good?” The Czech only says: “I’m on the side of women and girls.”
An X user finds: “A parent who denies the identity of their child is not supportive.” Another writes: «Martina, you are an absolute legend, but that is completely wrong. You’re spreading transphobic misinformation to fuel a trans panic.”
Navratilova herself belongs to the LGBT community. In 2014, the 66-year-old married her longtime friend, former Russian model Julia Lemigova (51).
