Coco Gauff Expresses Preference for Toronto over Montreal

Coco Gauff said it in all naivety, from the height of her 19 years: she prefers Toronto to Montreal.

Don’t worry, it was harmless. The friendly American is happy to be back in Montreal for a second time. In 2021, she reached the quarter-finals in a tournament disrupted by health restrictions.

“So it’s the first time I’ve walked the streets of the city,” Gauff said at a press conference on Monday.

Last summer, the current seventh in the world also lost in the quarterfinals in the Queen City.

“I’m not going to lie, I like Toronto more because it’s more like an American city,” she laughed.

French or English?

“Canadians are generally nice people and maybe that’s why I have good results here. Fans are very respectful,” added Gauff.

“Today [lundi], after my training, even if it started to rain, I did my best to sign autographs. My biggest challenge so far in Montreal is that I don’t know who speaks French or English!”

If there’s one player who wasn’t too sad to see the rain, it’s Gauff, as her opener could be pushed back to Wednesday. This would allow the sixth favorite of the competition to recover after triumphing on Sunday in Washington.

Gauff will rub shoulders with the Canadian Rebecca Marino, 103rd or the Briton Katie Boulter, 72nd.
