The point guard for the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Spanish basketball team, Ricky Rubio, announced Saturday that he will suspend his career indefinitely to focus on mental health.

“I have decided to stop my professional activity to take care of my mental health. I want to thank all the support I have received from the Spanish team so that they understand my decision. Today the #family makes more sense than ever. Thank you. I would ask that my privacy be respected for to be able to face these moments and be able to give more information when the time is right.

Later this month, Rubio was expected to lead the Spaniards in a bid to defend their World Cup title in the Philippines. But he left the team’s training camp earlier this week in Madrid and did not play in Spain’s first warm-up game on Friday night against Venezuela.

Rubio, 32, was the MVP of the last 2019 World Cup in China. Spain is currently ranked as the number 1 team in the world ahead of the United States after winning the European championship last summer. The Spaniards no longer have point guard Lorenzo Brown, star in the race to the Eurobasket title, due to injury.

The 12-year NBA veteran had a mediocre season for the Cavs last year as he recovered from a torn ACL, the second of his career, suffered during the 2021-22 season. He averaged 5.2 points and 3.5 assists in 33 games after rejoining the team midway through the season.

Rubio has two seasons and $12.5 million remaining on a contract signed with the Cavs last summer.
