CJ Stroud Gets a Taste of the NFL in Preseason Debut Against the New England Patriots

CJ Stroud only played two series in his first NFL outing on Thursday night, but he got to know Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots.

Two completed passes in four attempts, 13 winning passes, one interception and a quarterback sack. Let’s just say he got to know the Patriots quarterback chasers.

“It’s pretty crazy as an opportunity, to be able to play in an NFL stadium, play my first game in the NFL. I went through a lot of hardships to get to this moment. It was special. Obviously, I would have liked not to make a mistake on a specific play, but otherwise, I think I played well,” said Stroud after the Houston Texans’ 20-9 victory.

The Texans offensive line was made up mostly of backup players, and the pressure on Stroud was high. The Patriots forced Stroud to lose ground on three occasions by pushing him out of his comfort zone.

“I think it was good for CJ to play and have a few sets. It gives him a real vision. I believe he moved well, he got to the right spot with the ball a few times and it was good to see him come out of the pocket to make plays,” Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans explained. .

Stroud was selected second overall by the Texans in the last draft. Last season in the NCAA, he completed 258 passes for 3,688 yards and threw for 41 touchdowns.

Stroud signed his first NFL contract at the end of July. He will earn $36.3 million over four seasons.
