Chelsea offers Djordje Petrovic, a new goalkeeper from MLS

Chelsea’s tenth summer signing is Djordje Petrovic. On Saturday, at the end of the day, the Blues formalized the arrival of the 23-year-old Serbian goalkeeper from the New England Revolution club for around €16 million. He signed a seven-year contract with an option for an additional season.

By formalizing the most expensive transfer in the history of MLS for a goalkeeper, Chelsea offers a lining of choice to Robert Sanchez, also arrived this summer from Brighton for 23 M€. Trained at Cukaricki Belgrade, with whom he made his professional debut in 2019, Petrovic flew to the United States in April 2022 to join the New England Revolution, where he brilliantly succeeded Matt Turner, who left for Arsenal. He quickly became a benchmark for his position across the Atlantic, to the point of being voted MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2022.

With his 94 meter, his solidity on his line (highest percentage of saves in MLS in 2023) and a good kicking game, Petrovic has two selections with Serbia. Two years separate its first (January 2021) and its second (January 2023). He was recalled during the last rally for the Euro 2024 qualifying phase but remained on the bench.

“I always dreamed of signing for one of the biggest clubs in the world. Today I achieved that goal and I’m so happy about it,” Petrovic said in a teaser video. He becomes the second Serbian goalkeeper in the history of Chelsea after Petar Borota between 1979 and 1982. “He’s a legend in Serbia! “Explains the 23-year-old doorman, who also admits being a fan of Thibaut Courtois, who joined the Blues between 2014 and 2018.
