Raw talents, Mathéo Huard (left) and Thomas Huard (right) are to be watched closely in the years to come.

This is not the first and it will not be the last time that Mathéo Huard and Thomas Huard shine on the provincial scene. Associated in doubles in the U15s, the brothers still wreaked havoc. After having disposed of Eloïk Dault and Tony Samaha (21-5/21-6), the brothers took charge of Thomas Hamel and Eric Yin (21-11/21-15). The residents of CB Noranda then saw their epic stopped by Ruicheng Yang and Heyu Zhang (22-20/21-11). A setback that allows them to hang on to the last place on the podium and therefore to return to Abitibi-Témiscamingue with a bronze medal around their necks.

Almost

“It was a great championship but there were three heartbreaking defeats”, describes Yannick Gaubert. The CB Noranda frontman hints in particular at the cruel U19 mixed doubles quarter-final defeat of Mélina Bouchard and Philippe Gaubert, who were overthrown by Yuetong pair Jenny Zhang-Jacob Bouchard as they led 20-16 in the third set (21-12/11-21/24-22). The eliminations of Mathéo Huard as well as Thomas Huard at the gates of the semi-finals in the U13 men’s singles draw are also affected by these remarks. The siblings were knocked out by Heyu Zhang (21-14/9-21/21-17) and Francis Le (21-15/21-18) respectively in matchups that came down to small details.

“It’s a question of experience and there’s a lot of psychology in it. It is difficult, in a practice, to recreate these situations. They will learn a lot from these defeats because it is from this kind of match that we learn the most”, certifies the head coach of CB Noranda. “Often at the end of the match when it comes to concluding, young people don’t think about what they have to do and what they have done well to get to twenty points. They rush things, think only of the result and become impatient: this is where the stress gets in, ”also specifies the latter. “They wanted to win straight away, for the others to make the mistake instead of creating an opportunity to win the point. The mental aspect is too important, ”adds Denyse Julien.

“Nice Surprises”

This provincial championship put a point of honor in the provincial junior season. “It’s been a good season, with ups and downs, but we’re very happy with our youngsters. They are in good shape,” points out Yannick Gaubert.

Nevertheless, the season is not over for all that insofar as some are preparing for two deadlines: the provincial school championship as well as the provincial Elite ABC championship, which will kick off on April 21 on the grounds of the Yvon-Lamarche Sports Center in Sherbrooke. “We can cause great surprises,” assures the head coach of CB Noranda, referring in particular to the potential of Mélina Bouchard.

In order to better prepare for these meetings, badminton players from the region will be able to take advantage of the arrival of former members of the Rouge et Or and the Carabins to practice. The opportunity for these young people to gain experience and benefit from another speed of play to which they are accustomed.
