That was very close for the top favourite: Hubert Hurkacz had it on his bat, but Carlos Alcaraz got away again and is in the final in Cincinnati after a 2: 6, 7: 6 (4), 6: 3.

Hubert Hurkacz made a formidable lightning start. He promptly took the service from Carlos Alcaraz in his first service game and started the game 3-0. The Pole remained the better player for the rest of the set. Unsurprisingly, Hurkacz built his game on serve and, like the previous round against Australia’s Mike Purcell, Alcaraz struggled to find his precision. The balance between power and accuracy was not right in the industry leader. After 38 minutes, the Pole won the first set 6:2, which was well deserved.

And in the second set it became increasingly tight for the world number one. Both players held their serves. Alcaraz sniffed the break from time to time. But, also like against Purcell, Alcaraz didn’t get along well with his opponent’s serve-and-volley for large parts. 5:4 Hurkacz took the lead in the second set.

Huge match point chance for Hurkacz

And in Alcaraz’s next service game, the Pole actually had a free forehand shot on a match point, but he missed it just a little. Hurkacz doesn’t get another chance to win. Alcaraz equalizes to 5: 5. Shortly thereafter it was the tie-break.

The Pole already led 4:1 here. But suddenly Carlos Alcaraz was able to pull the lever. He scored six points in a row, with some spectacular winners.

That led to the third set. Carlos Alcaraz opened it and his opponent always had to follow suit with his service. However, that didn’t work for long. Already at 1:2 from his point of view, Hurkacz lost his serve. Alcaraz pulled away 4-1. Now the Pole couldn’t turn the match anymore. Alcaraz won the third round and the match 6:3.
