Borussia Dortmund Defeats Ajax Amsterdam 3-1 in Pre-season Match

At the start of the season, Borussia Dortmund won 3-1 against Ajax Amsterdam from the Netherlands. The last test before the start of the competitive games produced a winner.

Match winner as joker: Dortmund’s newcomer Felix Nmecha. IMAGO/Eibner

Edin Terzic started with two newcomers to BVB, Bensebaini and Sabitzer. Keeper Meyer, Ryerson and ex-captain Reus also started, Adeyemi was absent due to muscular problems, as was Kobel (slight muscle fiber tear). At Ajax, Maurice Steijns relied on the ex-Bundesliga players Klaassen (Bremen) and Brobbey (Leipzig), Kudus and Bergwijn acted on the offensive.

Brandt scores quickly after great preparatory work

In the almost sold-out Signal-Iduna-Park, neither team took a break at the beginning. After just three minutes, Sabitzer tested Rulli from a distance, and a little later the Ajax keeper was no longer able to save: Hummels crossed to the first post with the outside of his foot, Brandt completed the volley (6th).

Brobbey countered the BVB leadership immediately

Anyone who thought that Ajax was impressed by this was wrong: the Dutch equalized immediately after BVB took the lead, Brobbey scored a free-standing header, Hummels was too far away (7th). After that there was a lot of back and forth, Reus failed after a Haller back-heel to Rulli (15th).

The next good chance belonged to Reus again, who failed for superior Dortmund on Aertssen, who cleared the line (27th). At the back, BVB defended partially airy, Meyer parried strongly against the free-standing Bergwijn (29th). One of the most conspicuous players in the Bundesliga runners-up was his ex-captain, Reus failed again due to Rulli (43rd). Haller had previously shot just over the goal (36th).

Reus stayed outside at the break, Nmecha came into play at BVB. Central defender Medic, who only officially moved to the Netherlands from FC St. Pauli in the morning, was new to the game for Ajax. It was also Medic who saved from the line shortly after the restart (47th). There was nothing left for keeper Rulli to save seven minutes later: Joker Nmecha completed a thoughtful goal after Haller’s lay-off and was celebrated (54′).

It didn’t take Nmecha long to put together the brace, the newcomer from Wolfsburg skilfully finished after Ryerson’s energetic performance and Besebaini’s lay-off and scored again (60′). At the other end, Kudus narrowly missed the goal (62′).

BVB keeper Meyer shows strong performance

At Ajax, for which ex-Frankfurter Ramaj kept the goal from the 64th minute, little went forward for a long time because BVB dominated. After a few changes of hosts, however, the Dutch had good chances, which Meyer thwarted twice (73rd against Bergwijn, 76th against van den Boomen).

Since goalscorer Brobbey also lost out in a one-on-one with Meyer (80′) and Hato on the other side prevented an own goal from Berghuis just before the line (86′), BVB remained 3-1 at the front had a strong joker ready and a good-humored goalkeeper at the back.

BVB will start the season with their first competitive game on Saturday, while regional league club TSV Schott Mainz will be waiting in the first round of the DFB Cup (3:30 p.m.). Ajax start a few hours later against Heracles Almelo in the Eredivisie (8 p.m.).
