BVB arrivals and departures in summer 2023
BVB sports director Sebastian Kehl also emphasized before this season that they were basically satisfied with the black and yellow squad. Unlike in previous years, when almost all new signings had already been confirmed before the start of the Bundesliga, there are still a few construction sites at Borussia Dortmund – Kehl has, however, completed the most difficult tasks.
The main aim was to fill the gap left by Jude Bellingham (20), who had switched to Real Madrid and who, with a basic fee of 103 million euros, provided a lot of financial flexibility. The sale of Ansgar Knauff (21), who was loaned to Eintracht Frankfurt, brought in a further 5 million euros. Since Mahmoud Dahoud (27; Brighton) and Raphaël Guerreiro (29; FC Bayern) lost two more options for the midfield center free of charge, BVB added two more options.

BVB invested 49 million euros in Felix Nmecha (22) and Marcel Sabitzer (29), but both transfers also caused some discussions. While Sabitzer’s transfer, like all commitments from big rival FC Bayern, was accompanied by numerous background noises, homophobic and anti-queer postings and likes by ex-Wolfsburg player Nmecha on social media caused criticism from large sections of the fans.

Nmecha spoke of things taken out of context and emphasized not to discriminate against anyone and to hope for a chance with BVB supporters. Those responsible gave him this beforehand and, after a conversation, were convinced that Nmecha shares the basic code of values and will act accordingly. However, the trust does not seem that great when the Revierklub recently made it clear to journalists that questions to Nmecha on the subject are undesirable. The transfer still harbors potential for conflict, after an ankle injury Nmecha is initially at a disadvantage in the midfield center around new captain Emre Can (29).

The second major construction site that Kehl was able to close was on the left side of defence. As a replacement for Guerreiro, BVB took Ramy Bensebaini (28) on a free transfer from Borussia Mönchengladbach. The fact that right-back Julian Ryerson (25) can also play on the other side made it possible for talented Tom Rothe (18) to go on loan to Holstein Kiel, where the DFB junior impressively demonstrated his potential in the first three games as a regular. On the side of the departures there are also a handful of professionals like Nico Schulz (30) and Anthony Modeste (35), who no longer had a future at BVB.

There could still be movement at BVB in these positions
Sports director Kehl recently said that BVB would continue to monitor the transfer market. Coach Edin Terzic followed suit and admitted that an attacker should come. The position of right-back has also been on the list of those responsible for weeks, since after Felix Passlack (25) left for neighbors VfL Bochum, Thomas Meunier (31) and Mateu Morey Bauzà (23) are also considered candidates for change, although not yet an option has opened for her. In central defense, Borussia should also look around.
