In a dramatic definition, Boca Juniors beat Nacional on penalties in the Bombonera to achieve the long-awaited qualification to the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores. Edinson Cavani’s debut as a starter was exempt from tranquility due to a changing process resolved by the magnificent performance of Sergio Chiquito Romero and in La Ribera it will be time to wait for his next rival to find a place in the semifinals.

This Thursday the next obstacle will be set for those led by Jorge Almirón. Unlike what happened with its classic rival hours ago, Xeneize will watch carefully what happens from 9:00 p.m. at the Presidente Perón Stadium between Atlético Nacional and Racing. Verdolaga became strong at home to beat Fernando Gago’s Academy in Medellín 4-2. The Argentine team must win by a difference of three goals or more to win in regulation time and if they do so by a margin of two they will go to penalties. Any other result will leave you out.

The opponent is not minor because that will affect the locality of the two-legged qualifiers. If the qualifier is the Colombian team, Boca will define in La Bombonera with the support of its fans thanks to having been the leader of Group F (Atlético Nacional was second in Group H). Otherwise, Racing will define the key in the Cylinder for having been better first than the 2022 Professional League champion.

The definition by penalties of Boca-Nacional

A few days after having its debut in Zone 2 of the League Cup against Platense, Boca Juniors will play the first leg from August 22 to 24, while the rematches will take place between the 29th and 31st of the same month. There are no confirmed dates and times yet. In a different tune, the semifinals will take place from September 27 to October 4 and the winners of these matches will have a guaranteed presence in the final on November 4 at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

The winner of the duel between Boca and Atlético Nacional or Racing will clash with the winner of Deportivo Pereira and Palmeiras. The Colombian team, making its debut in the Copa Libertadores, delivered the coup by eliminating one of the candidates for the crown, Independiente del Valle. After winning 1-0 at home, they matched the chances in the second leg with a 1-1 draw that catapulted them to the next phase. On the other hand, Verdão took Atlético Mineiro out of the competition after the brief 1-0 win in 180 minutes.

On the antagonistic side of the table, Bolívar eliminated Athletico Paranaense on penalties in Brazil and will face Inter de Porto Alegre led by Eduardo Coudet after El Chacho was responsible for River Plate’s departure under the same route. The last match awaits definition because Fluminense (beat Argentinos 3-1 at 180 minutes) awaits Flamengo or Olimpia, who will play this Thursday from 9:00 p.m. (Argentine time) with a 1-0 advantage for Jorge Sampaoli’s Fla.
