Belgian Volleyball Men Show Promise but Fall Short Against Serbia at European Championship

The Belgian volleyball men have not been able to reward themselves with points at the European Championship after an excellent match against top country Serbia. At times, the Red Dragons proved to be the counterpart of the former European champion. It only gave them a set and a confidence boost.

Winning was not on the Red Dragons’ wish list, but it had to perform better against Serbia than in their opening game.

That’s what the Belgians did from the start. The European champion of four years ago could not distance himself from a team that suddenly turned and played volleyball with confidence.

The first set surprisingly seemed to go to Belgium, until Serbia placed an intermediate sprint on experience: from 20-22 to 25-20. A downer.

Although the Dragons didn’t let it get to their hearts. Stijn D’Hulst dictated and varied the offensive game for the Belgians. With success, because after a good series, the first set win was a fact of this tournament.

Belgium suddenly felt that there was more to it, so Serbia had to raise the level.

This mainly happened behind the service line. Whenever the Red Dragons could force a gap in the hard-fought sets, the Serbs hit back with unsustainable bombs.

Belgium kept pace twice until the end of the set. But then the experience of the older Serbs surfaced. The result: twice 25-20 and no first point(s) for the Belgians.

A performance to build on for Sunday, when Germany is the next opponent.
