The world skating championships are currently taking place in Italy. For the first time in four years, our compatriot Bart Swings will also be present again.
In sweltering conditions, Swings fought for silver in the elimination on Saturday. Colombian Juan Mantilla snatched gold right under his nose. Jason Suttels, the other Belgian at the start, finished twelfth.
On Sunday, Swings flushed that “defeat” with a first gold medal. On the kilometer he was lord and master. Silver was for the Chilean Hugo Ramirez, bronze for the Italian Duccio Marsili.
Finally, Swings was also able to win a medal in the points race over 10 kilometers. Our compatriot captured bronze, after the Frenchman Martin Ferrié and again Mantilla, who had already won the elimination on Saturday.
