Belgian Judokas Face Mixed Results at Budapest Masters Tournament

Jorre Verstraeten hoped for a decent performance in Budapest beforehand, but he didn’t get further than the second round. In the first round he defeated the Israeli Yam Wolczak (IJF 24) thanks to a waza-ari, but in the second round the Mongolian Enjtaivan Ariunbold (IJF 9) was too strong with a double waza-ari.

The Belgian women also did not have much success in the class up to 52 kilograms. Amber Ryheul (IJF 20) still won her match in the first round against the Portuguese Maria Siderot (IJF 25), but then went out in the second round against the Kosovo number 1 in the world Distria Krasniqi, who won after a waza -ari.

Charline Van Snick (IJF 38) went against the Israeli Gefen Primo (IJF 6) after too many penalty points in the first round.

“I did everything I could,” Ryheul said afterwards. “I knew it wasn’t going to be an easy fight against the first seed. My attitude wasn’t always positive enough so I got penalized. Twenty seconds from the end, she scored a waza-ari and there was nothing I could do.”

It was Amber Ryheul’s first participation in the masters tournament, in which the best 36 judokas of each weight class participate. The 2019 European U23 champion has gained valuable experience.

“I was proud to be there. Not everyone can participate in such a tournament,” said Ryheul. “I had about the same draw as at the World Cup. I managed to win my first camp against the Portuguese Maria Siderot. That is positive. I felt strong and fresh.”

“I feel that I am making progress, but to beat Krasniqi I have to improve some things. I am convinced that with my guidance I will get there. My next appointment is the Grand Prix in Zagreb in two weeks.”
