Basketball: Marine Johannès wins her first trophy in the United States

The good news follows one another for Marine Johannès and her New York Liberty partners. Thanks to their success against Chicago Sky this weekend, they have officially won their ticket to the final stages of the championship which begin in September. Another happiness, on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, they won, at the Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas, the Commissioner’s Cup, a mid-season competition in the WNBA.

This is the first trophy across the Atlantic for the Norman. Eurocup and French champion with Asvel earlier this season, the 28-year-old international – whose departure to the United States in May had caused controversy and misunderstanding with the French Federation – adds one more line to his track record.

Rather discreet lately, after a start to the adventure in the United States with a bang, Marine Johannes was instrumental in winning this trophy. Opposed in the final against the Las Vegas Aces (82-63) – WNBA champion last season with the French Iliana Rupert, leader of the regular season and who had the advantage of playing at home -, New York was able to count on the address and strokes of genius of the Frenchwoman.

Johannes finished top scorer in the game with 17 points… (with a nice 6 of 8 on shots, 5 of 7 from 3 points) in just 14 minutes and 20 seconds. She notably distinguished herself with two long distance baskets in a row to offer her team a first break at the end of the first quarter. Actions that are looping on social networks. The MVP title went to his partner Jonquel Jones (16 points, 15 rebounds).

In addition to the trophy, the players pocket a nice check for 30,000 dollars (27,500 euros) and fill up with confidence before attacking the final stages in a few weeks. The goal will be to add a new title to the New York charts.
