Basketball Löwen Braunschweig Bolster Frontcourt with Amar Sylla’s Arrival

After the return of Martin Peterka, the Basketball Löwen Braunschweig once again strengthened their frontcourt with Amar Sylla. The 21-year-old Senegalese comes from Spanish ACB relegated Betis Sevilla and, despite his young age, can already look back on some experience at the top European level. The 2.06 meter tall Big Man enjoyed his basketball training at the highest level in the Real Madrid youth program. In Oostende, Belgium, the jumper Sylla gained his first experience in the Champions League over two years at his first professional station. He recommended himself in the 2021/2022 season on his stop at Kėdainiai Nevezis in Lithuania as the league’s top rebounder and a very convincing performance in the dress of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Summer League for a move to Seville.

Amar Sylla is happy about his move to the Lion City: “I’ve been talking to coach Jesús regularly for two years now and I’ve liked his concept ever since. It’s a new stage in my career and an important step to develop personally and as a player. I’m looking forward to coming to Braunschweig soon, working with the team and improving together.”

Jesús Ramírez explains the new signing: “Amar is a young and hungry player who we have been following very closely for three years and are happy that we have now been able to convince him of our concept. We want to help him here to develop his great potential and to take the next step together. Despite his young age, he already has a lot of experience and comes to us from the strong ACB. With his playful ability, his intensity and his agility, he brings us many attributes that we need for a successful team.”

Nils Mittmann: “We have been following Amar Sylla very closely for a long time and have always been in contact with him. Now I’m happy that it worked out with his signing. Amar fits perfectly into our requirement profile and stands for #jungwildhungrig. He will enrich our game with his athleticism and dynamism in the big positions. Amar has experience at the top European level, playing in both the Champions League and ACB. In Braunschweig we want to work together on his playful development and fully exploit his potential.”

Born in the Senegalese capital of Dakar, the talented Amar Sylla chose the path to Europe in 2016 and was trained by Real Madrid over three years as a youth. However, the then 18-year-old dared his first steps in the professional field in the Belgian port city of Oostende, where he was able to play 32 competitive games in both the league and the Champions League in his first season and scored almost 7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game was an important part of the master rotation. The following year, Sylla was able to confirm his values and even add domestic cup competition to the defense of the Belgian Championship. There was no championship to celebrate with Kėdainiai Nevezis next season, but the Senegalese was voted the best rebounder in the Lithuanian league with an average of 7.7 rebounds and also set a career high with 11.1 points. These ideas paved the way for him to Andalusia. In a difficult season that ended with Betis Sevilla being relegated on the final day, Amar Sylla averaged 3.2 points and rebounds per game in 13 minutes. This summer, Sylla appeared in the NBA Summer League for the third time in a row and drew attention to herself, especially last year, with 10.2 points and 4.0 rebounds in five games.
