Mike Verweij thinks things are going well with Brian Brobbrey and Steven Bergwijn. His colleague Valentijn Driessen thinks so, he says in the Kick-off podcast.

“I thought Brobbey and especially Steven Bergwijn played really well,” says Verweij, after the 3-1 defeat against Borussia Dortmund last Sunday. “I think they had a very good conditional preparation and for me they were the best players on the side of Ajax.”

Verweij does acknowledge that Brobbey still missed the necessary chances and should have scored more. However, the journalist sees that it will work out. “That was also one of the points that Maurice Steijn was talking about. They really had a lot of opportunities throughout the preparation. Brobbey also had quite a few opportunities at the end of last season and he didn’t score then. While his specialty was always: a chance is a goal. I don’t think Brobbey lacks quality, I think those goals will come back. If he only approached the keeper in youth, you could already score a goal.”

Driessen, on the other hand, is a lot less enthusiastic. He thinks that the performance did not reach Ajax standards. “Mike sets the bar a little lower than me, because of course it could have been better. They were both alone in front of the keeper two or three times, so you can score a bit more. Maybe Brobbey just lacks quality? You see now also with that Carlos Forbs… He has also only played football in youth leagues, so you have absolutely no idea what he will bring. We were very curious what he could do, but after the Dortmund game we still don’t know anything. He really has no ball well hit.”
