Argentina’s Women’s Soccer Team Eliminated from 2023 World Cup, Estefanía Banini’s Farewell

The Argentine women’s team lost 2-0 against Sweden in the 2023 Australia-New Zealand World Cup and was eliminated on the third and last date of the World Cup group stage, without any victory in the tournament. In addition, it was the last game of the figure Estefanía Banini with the Albiceleste.

After falling 1-0 against Italy in their debut last Monday and drawing with South Africa on Thursday, the national team was left with only 1 point and the obligation to add another 3 against Sweden to continue on their way. But also, they needed South Africa to lose, to finish second in Group G and qualify for the round of 16 for the first time in their history. Neither of those things happened.

Argentina was eliminated from the Women’s Soccer World Cup

In addition to South Africa’s 3-2 victory against Italy, the Argentine national team failed to snatch the victory from the Swedes at the Waikato Stadium, in the city of Hamilton. The European team, clear favorites and qualified in advance for the next round, set up an alternative formation with just two of the players who played in the previous game (5-0 vs. Italy).

After a drawn first half in which Argentina tried to defend against set pieces and look for a counterattack –although it did not create too many situations– Sweden scored their first goal 66 minutes into the game, with a header from striker Rebecka Blomqvist. On regulation time, and with a penalty involved, midfielder Elin Rubensson set the final score.

Thus, the Nordics advanced undefeated to the round of 16, where they will face the United States, the most winning country in women’s soccer with four world titles. Argentina, for its part, closed its passage through a new World Cup, the fourth in which it participated in its history.

The last match of Estefanía Banini in the Argentine National Team

The defeat and elimination in the 2023 World Cup also marked the end of the cycle of Estefanía Banini, the figure of the squad, who had already warned that it was going to be her last contest with the selected shirt. The tears of the soccer player during the Argentine anthem before the game marked what would be a day full of emotion.

“It was a difficult match against a great power. We wanted to win and go through, but we are showing the way. Now there is a generation ahead that will defend the shirt,” said Banini. And she added: “Today I have to leave, but I am proud of the path I traveled with the Argentine National Team. With the light blue and white there will be no more dribbling, but I am leaving very calmly.”
