The NBA is going on a football tour. There will be an extra cup competition next season: the NBA Cup. A novelty in major American sports and of course intended to make the American professional league even more attractive and to earn even more money.
The plans had been shelved for a while, but the NBA has now announced the details of the new competition. The tournament starts with six groups of five teams and eventually culminates in a final in Las Vegas.

The period from November 3 to December 9 has been chosen, in the eyes of NBA boss Adam Silver the least interesting period of the ‘regular’ NBA season. Stern is known as a big fan of European football, where the cup competition is commonplace.

By allowing the games to count for the normal season and therefore the battle for the playoffs and the best starting position therein, the NBA also prevents the clubs from using the new tournament to give their players extra rest during that period.
The fifteen teams per Conference (East and West) are neatly divided into six groups. The six group winners will be joined by two wild card teams in the quarter-finals, after which the knockout phase will begin.
Only the two teams that reach the final will play 83 games, but that game does not count for the competition.
No guaranteed playoff spot
Initially, the NBA thought of giving the winning team a guaranteed playoff spot, but that idea didn’t make it. The winner has to make do with a cup, the players of the winning team each receive $ 500,000 and those of the losing finalist $ 200,000 each.
