Alexander Zverev goes into the US Open 2023 with confidence.

He is generally in a “great mood,” said the 26-year-old during a media round in New York on Saturday. “The last few weeks are going well. I hope that I can continue like this here,” said Zverev, who met Australian Aleksandar Vukic on Tuesday at the start of the hard court Grand Slam.

“In order to win such big tournaments,” explained the Hamburger, “you need good matches against big players – Cincinnati helped me a lot there.” At the ATP tournament about a week ago, Zverev had beaten the Russian Daniil Medvedev and thus a top 10 player for the first time after his serious ankle injury in June 2022. In the semi-finals, he narrowly missed out on eventual tournament winner Novak Djokovic from Serbia.

Zverev has no points to defend

At the US Open, Alexander Zverev has no points to defend due to his injury last year and the associated early end of the season and can therefore return to the top 10 in the world rankings after the US Open.

His first round opponent, 51st in the ATP world rankings, is a largely blank slate for Zverev. “We’ve never played each other before, but he played quite well on hard,” he said. “So I assume he’s in good shape.”
