The transfer fee that Ajax has to pay to bring in Thiago Almada is almost twice as high as previously thought. On Friday morning, Mike Verweij reported that the Argentinian can be collected from Atlanta United for an amount of approximately 15 million euros including bonuses, but now The Athletic states that a minimum of 26.7 million euros must be paid to recruit the attacking midfielder.

Almada started his career with Vélez Sarsfield in Argentina. In February last year, he left for the MLS for 14 million euros, where he has been making a big impression ever since. The attacking midfielder has played 55 games for Atlanta United so far, scoring 16 goals and providing 17 assists. His performance did not pass Lionel Scaloni either. The national coach of the Argentina national team brought him into the selection for the World Cup in Qatar, where he played for six minutes.

According to Transfermarkt, Almada represents a market value of 27 million euros, but Verweij knows that director of football affairs Sven Mislintat can pick him up cheaper. Including bonuses, his arrival must be possible for 15 million euros, De Telegraaf claimed. Mislintat has only received positive reports from Ajax’s scouting apparatus and technical staff. However, the Supervisory Board could be a spoilsport. The arrival of the Argentinian is therefore not yet a foregone conclusion.

The Athletic therefore speaks of a completely different transfer fee than De Telegraaf. According to the British quality medium, Atlanta is not ready to let Almada go just like that. The Argentinian was finally taken over from Velez Sarsfield for around fifteen million euros and he has made a big impression in the MLS ever since. Atlanta wants Almada to become the most expensive outgoing player ever.

It is not the first time that the name of Almada is used in the Netherlands. Feyenoord previously looked at the possibility of bringing the attacking midfielder to the top of the Eredivisie. The team from Rotterdam saw in him the suitable replacement for Sebastian Szymanski who had left for Fenerbahçe, but soon came to the conclusion that his arrival was not feasible. The Argentinian still has a contract with Atlanta United until December 31, 2025.
