After the historic end in the group phase of the women’s soccer World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, Brazil prematurely ended its collaboration with the Swedish star trainer Pia Sundhage.
The 63-year-old was originally set to lead the Selecao at the Paris Olympics next year, but missing out on a World Cup knockout round for the first time in 28 years weighed too heavily.
Also failed early on at the Olympics
After three Olympic finals in a row (gold with the USA in 2008 and 2012, silver with Sweden in 2016), Sundhage took office at the Sugar Loaf in August 2019 with a lot of early praise, but failed at the 2021 Summer Games in Tokyo and now at the last World Cup by superstar Marta early.
Winning last year’s Copa America remains the only title after 57 games under her command. According to the Brazilian federation, the coaching team that will lead the team to the Olympic Games in Paris 2024 and the 2027 World Cup should be presented “in the coming days”.
