by Alessandro Crisafulli

Escape from house arrest, knife in pocket. Robbery, with stolen car. Then the escape, by train. With the loot of 700 euros. But, also, with the carabinieri at the doorstep, with handcuffs at the ready. The protagonist of the story is a 65-year-old Italian offender, residing in Caronno Pertusella, in the Varesotto area. Who chose a pharmacy in Cogliate for his away shot. Around 11 the criminal shows up inside the shop. Without wasting time, also taking advantage of the fact that there are no customers around, he heads towards the counter and threatens the pharmacist, pointing the blade at her. The woman, paralyzed by fear, leaves him free rein, also to avoid worse troubles. Thus, he grabs all the banknotes from the cash register and then flees, certain that he can cover up his tracks. The victim immediately calls 112 and the patrols of the Compagnia di Desio rush to the scene. They make sure that the woman is well, then start investigations and searches.

According to the first description – yellow knife and a baseball cap – they go on the trail of the robber. They analyze surveillance cameras, both private and public, inside and outside the pharmacy. And they identify the area on the border between the provinces of Monza and Varese as the area where to concentrate. After about half an hour, the device of 10 soldiers traces the man near the Saronno railway station. Then, they go to his home in Caronno, where they wait for him. No sooner said than done. They block him – surprising him just as he feels safe by now – and find both the knife and the cash on him. The investigators, reconstructing the exact dynamics of the facts, then discovered that during his travels he had moved aboard a stolen Fiat 500, also used for the robbery and subsequently left in the parking lot of the Saronno station, to then continue his escape by train home in a vain attempt to go unnoticed and get away with it. At the end of the investigations, coordinated first by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Busto Arsizio and subsequently by that of Monza, the carabinieri arrested the 65-year-old on charges of robbery and receiving stolen goods.
