There was a scandal at the Hungarian Open for women in Budapest. Zhang Shuai gave up Tuesday’s round of 16 match against Amarissa Toth after she committed a gross unsportsmanlike act.

The story that has shocked the tennis world has its origins in a controversial line decision. Zhang’s forehand apparently lands on the outside line of the service field and is evaluated as “out” by the linesman. Zhang disagrees with this verdict and argues with the chair umpire, who upholds the decision.
So far nothing extraordinary. One more point is played until, at 30:30, Zhang – still unsatisfied with the decision – calls for the tournament official. Toth then uses his shoe to wipe away the mark left on the sand by the disputed ball.
This unsportsmanlike behavior is too much for Zhang, who sits down on the bench and lets her tears flow. She finally manages to shake hands with the referee and her opponent before leaving the pitch and retiring, trailing 5-6 in the first set.
The Hungarian Toth cheers in front of the home crowd, the Chinese Zhang is booed by the spectators. However, Toth’s behavior has been sharply criticized online. Ajla Tomljanović, number 62 in the world rankings, writes: “Absolutely disgusting behavior. Shuai is a better person than many of us because she shook hands with the referee and this woman.”
