The first from the German track and field team have secured their places for the World Cup. The squad for Budapest is quite large and should be more powerful than at the World Cup in Eugene.

The German Athletics Association plans again with a large contingent for the World Championships. Head coach Annett Stein is expecting around 70 to 80 German starters at the World Championships in Budapest from August 19th to 27th.

This would be hardly less than a year ago at the World Championships in Eugene in the USA. There had been numerous disappointments and only gold from the now injured long jumper Malaika Mihambo and bronze from the sprint relay around Gina Lückenkemper.

Mihambo and double European champion Lückenkemper, as well as javelin throw European champion Julian Weber, are among the first group of athletes to be nominated this Monday. Stein announced this after the conclusion of the German Championships in Kassel. Everyone had secured the title there and met the international norm, Mihambo is eligible to start as the defending champion anyway. The new 200-meter record holder Joshua Hartmann and the discus throwers Kristin Pudenz and Shanice Craft are sure to be there at the highlight of the season in Hungary’s capital.

Targeted better balance sheet

Stein confirmed that the DLV team wanted to do better in Budapest than in Eugene. “What I can promise is that the team will be more efficient,” Stein said before the championships. She justified this by saying that the performance records for a nomination must be provided by July 30th, which is quite close to the World Cup. “For us, this is the guarantee that we nominate athletes who are not capable of winning a medal, but who perform well in an international context.”

Until the next round of nominations, Konstanze Klosterhalfen also has the chance to get proof of form. The recently unconvincing 5000-meter European champion was absent in Kassel due to a foot injury. There she should have started over 800 meters.
