Women’s World Cup: Australia loses captain Sam Kerr just before home entry

The Matildas will be deprived of their star for their entry into the running in their World Cup. Australian star captain Sam Kerr, injured in a calf, withdrew from Australia’s first two matches at the World Cup, including the opening match this Thursday noon (French time) against Ireland, announced the Australian federation.

The medical staff of the selection will reassess the state of health of the Chelsea striker “after our second group match” against Nigeria on July 27, said the federation one hour before the start of its World Cup at home in Sydney.

The captain is one of the most anticipated players of this World Cup, organized in her country and in New Zealand. Against France last week, the striker showed her explosiveness in the area, despite a lack of precision which prevented her from scoring. It was her teammate Mary Fowley who scored the winning goal for the Australians against Les Bleues (1-0).

Australia therefore starts its World Cup without it, against Ireland, at noon. The second match of this World Cup, after New Zealand’s victory over Norway at the opening (1-0), will be followed on W9.
