Women’s football inferior? This promo film with ‘Mbappé’ and ‘Griezmann’ tackles the cliché

The FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off in Australia and New Zealand on July 20. To show that this tournament is just as worth watching as the men’s World Cup, telecom giant Orange has launched a very remarkable promo video. Starring: star footballers Kylian Mbappé and Antoine Griezmann. Or not?

“The crazy actions of the French team that we have all forgotten”, is what Orange calls the video that the telecom company has put online, containing a compilation of beautiful goals, fast dribbles and partying French. While the commentators almost go crazy, we see Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappé, Olivier Giroud, Kingsley Coman and Aurélien Tchouaméni on the ball, football stars who made France world champions (or at least played the lost final of 2022).

“Only Les Bleus (the nickname of the male French football team, ed.) can give us these emotions. Yet they are not the ones you just saw,” we read halfway through the video. At least three things do indeed seem not quite right: the slightly too elegant-looking shapes of the French stars, the fact that they compete against women and – admittedly – the sparsely filled stadiums for such a star ensemble.

And indeed: what we get to see is an illusion. The promo video of course shows the French women’s team, but it was edited in the most beautiful way. Kylian Mbappé is actually Delphine Cascarino, behind the face of Antoine Griezmann are Sakina Karchaoui and Eugénie Le Sommer in reality and that handsome long shot by Kingsley Coman really came from Selma Bacha.

The message, to encourage the women’s team just as hard as the men, seems to be getting through: reactions on social media are enthusiastic. Although there are also people who immediately realized that they were being cheated. “When I saw Griezmann was wearing short sleeves, I knew something was wrong,” one Twitter user joked.

According to Orange, the video proves that women’s football is just as technical as men’s football. If the French players have as much technical baggage as the makers of the video, it will be all right for Les Bleues. For the sake of completeness: our country did not qualify for the World Cup.
