The protocols for action in cases of gender-based violence define a circuit, the steps to follow for a more comprehensive approach. The Mx League presented on Monday a model document to prevent and punish behaviors related to harassment and harassment against professional players, based on the collaboration of the non-governmental organization Somos Versus and the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection.

This document specifies the creation of a Gender and Diversity Commission in the structure of the clubs, in addition to a series of measures for the prevention, containment and resolution of cases of violence in the different areas of football. In 2019, the Mexican Soccer Federation (FMF) announced a three-year work agreement with the National Council to Prevent Discrimination (Conapred), in order to eradicate discriminatory acts, although in this case no manager required their advice.

We do not have a signed agreement to date or participation in the protocol, he explained to The Conference a spokesperson for the agency. The document presented by the League is a matter that can only be reviewed with them.

During the stage of collaboration between the institutions, awareness campaigns were used in the stadiums and a total of 402 FMF workers were trained. Conapred proposed to the federations the preparation of a protocol of this type to prevent and address acts of discrimination; furthermore, he tried unsuccessfully to revise the Code Fair Play of the governing body of soccer, used in the dismissal of the former soccer player Maribel Domínguez from the U-20 women’s team.

new allies

Despite the loss of this ally, the League intends to seek support from specialized organizations to sign new agreements, said the president of the tournament, Mikel Arriola.

In its study and preparation, the model protocol incorporated a series of measures that govern the Costa Rican Soccer Federation, the National Women’s Soccer League of the United States, FIFA’s guide to good practices in terms of diversity and the fight against discrimination, the mechanism against sexual harassment of the National Association of Women’s Soccer Players of Chile, as well as regulations of the Argentine clubs Platense, Huracán and Boca Juniors.

Although last March the National Commission to Prevent and Eradicate Violence against Women signed an agreement with Club América to work against gender violence and discrimination, it did not join this project either. Everything was left in the hands of Somos Versus. One of the points that Mariana Gutiérrez, director of the women’s circuit, highlights about the methodology used is the growing participation of the players to provide testimonials.

When you are going to carry out a diagnosis on this issue, the participation of people is usually very low, he pointed out. In this case, we had an outstanding response, above the average number of footballers who usually participate. All people were heard.
