Vive le Vélo about tandem Philipsen and Van der Poel “Can enjoy the success together” | Tour de France

3 sprinter chances. 3 times price. The Alpecin-Deceuninck duo Jasper Philipsen and Mathieu van der Poel can present a perfect report.

Father Adrie van der Poel also sees that things are going well between the two.

“Would I rather see Mathieu drive a lead-out than the actual sprint?”, he was asked yesterday in Vive le Vélo. “Maybe. The danger might be a bit lower after all.”

“But you just have a rider who can drive very good lead-outs. It would therefore be stupid not to use that, because it clearly produces results.”

“You also have to take into account the spring, where they also had a lot of support for each other.”

Even then, the duo was in top form. Van der Poel won Paris-Roubaix, Philipsen finished second and jumped on everything that moved.

“Those guys are now a bit older and get along better. They can enjoy success together. The same rider doesn’t always have to win,” said Adrie Van der Poel.

“I get on well with Jasper,” said Mathieu van der Poel this week in Vive le Vélo. “It clicks between us and then it’s just a little more fun. The chance of success is also great. If I guide him perfectly, he will finish it 8 times out of 10.”

Belgian national coach Sven Vanthourenhout also sees how the train works perfectly.

“Krag Andersen and Rickaert also play a major role in the preparation for that sprint.”

“Whether they are sometimes lucky? If you are there with the right riders, then you really force that sometimes. They never get into a position where they get completely enclosed.”

Today the riders get a possible new sprinter’s chance, but there are still a few difficult climbs waiting in the end.

“That ride may be something for riders like Mathieu or Julian Alaphilippe and Wout van Aert,” thinks Adrie van der Poel. “But I think that Philipsen can also strike again with its current form.”
