Verdugo’s Ninth Inning Homer Completes Red Sox Sweep of Blue Jays

(Toronto) Alex Verdugo hit a long ball in the ninth inning and the Boston Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4 on Saturday to complete their series sweep.

The Verdugo homer was hit on the first pitch pitched by Blue Jays pitcher Jordan Romano (3-4).

Jarren Duran was five-for-five with four doubles and Rafael Devers reached on base five times and drove in two runs in the victory.

The Red Sox have won three straight. The team is 7-0 against the Blue Jays this season, having lost 16 of 19 games in 2022.

Chris Martin (2-1) pitched an inning for the win and Joe Jacques finished the game to collect his first career save.

In the loss, Brandon Belt hit two home runs and Bichette added a two-run single. The Blue Jays led 4-2 in the sixth inning.

Kevin Gausman gave up two runs and five hits in five innings of work for the Blue Jays.

Masataka Yoshida was not in uniform after he was shot in the right leg on Saturday.
