Telfs – generation duel in the quarterfinals of the world tennis tournament at Birkenberg. On one side of the net is the 37-year-old Lukas Rosol, who knows all the tennis tricks, and on the other side the up-and-coming 23-year-old Sandro Kopp. A duel that the Tyrolean, who is 14 years his junior, won in two sets with a 6:4, 6:2 win, which allowed him to storm into the semi-finals of the Telfer tournament for the first time.
Kopp showed little respect for Rosol’s experience on the international tour, with his appearances in all Grand Slam tournaments, and also successfully resisted the tactical skills of the Czech. Crucial to the Kramsacher’s success was his physical strength on the one hand and his mental strength on the other. Especially in the first set, when Kopp fended off a series of break balls when the score was 4:3 for Rosol, was able to equalize to make it 4:4 and Rosol promptly broke. Kopp made it 6: 4. After the break to make it 1-0 in the second round, Kopp had the tournament’s number 1 firmly under control and served to win.
“He did what we set out to do,” said coach Hakan Dahlbo, praising his protégé’s strong performance. In the semi-finals on Saturday, Kopp will face Gerard Campana Lee, an 18-year-old Korean who caused a sensation at the Orange Bowl in Miami. (r.u.)
Quarterfinals: Kopp (AUT) – Rosol (JUN) 6:4, 6:2; Heller (GER) – Siniakov (JUN) 6-1, 6-0; Lee (KOR) – Parizzia (SUI) 6:3, 7:5; Barrena (ARG) – Gadamauri (BEL).
