Max Verstappen unapproachably gives a new dimension this season. In Austria he recorded his fifth victory in a row, he even had a surplus for an extra pit stop. Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez were allowed on the podium.
Pole position, fastest lap and 5th win in a row
For a moment there was tension in the race. Ferrari had taken advantage of the virtual safety car to give Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz new tires and so Max Verstappen ended up behind both Ferraris after his pit stop.
But the tension didn’t last long. Verstappen showed why he has been supreme all year. He quickly cleared the gap and with clinical accuracy he overtook both Ferraris back into the lead.
It was never in danger after that. His lead was even so large that he was able to take an extra pit stop in the final phase. Of course there was an idea behind that: on new, soft tires Verstappen still lapped teammate Sergio Perez’s fastest lap.
Perez closes the catch-up race in third place
In addition to the battle for victory, there was a lot to experience in Austria. All riders struggled to color within the lines. The track limits gave almost everyone headaches and also a lot of time penalties.
Lewis Hamilton, for example, had plenty of time to whimper over the on-board radio, until Toto Wolff had had enough. In between the time penalties there were a lot of fun fights on the track.
Sergio Perez was able to take third place from Carlos Sainz after a long and intense race to catch up. Behind the Mexican and the Spaniard, Lando Norris will be happy with the upgrades on his McLaren and fifth place.
