Tour de France: Adam Yates triumphs in front of his twin and takes the first yellow jersey of the 2023 edition

A family took over the first stage of the 2023 Tour. Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) was stronger than his brother Simon at the finish in Bilbao. The twins finished together, twelve seconds ahead of Tadej Pogacar, third in the race.

Adam Yates blew up everyone except its leader, Tadej Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard and Frenchman Victor Lafay in the Pike Hill. Pogacar tried to take off 500m from the summit but his companions hung on and most of the favorites came back to the lead on the descent. The Yates twins, Adam and Simon (Team Jayco Alula) took the opportunity to extricate themselves, scrape a ten-second lead, before playing for victory, as a family.

The breakaway of five riders, including the French Lilian Calmejane, Simon Guglielmi and Valentin Ferron, was caught 50 km from the finish. This inaugural stage was marked in particular by the falls with serious consequences for outsiders Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) and Enric Mas (Movistar) about twenty terminals from the line. The Ecuadorian struggled to leave, while the Spaniard was forced to retire.
