The Latvian women’s 3×3 basketball team lost the first game of the qualifiers in Priština on Friday at the stage of the World Series and said goodbye to the hopes of participating in the main tournament.
The 12th-ranked Latvian team, consisting of Aleksa Gulbe, Ketija Vihmane, Luīze Šepte and Marta Mishčenko, lost to Turkey (13th) in the first match of the qualification with a score of 8:11. Turkish women won both games and secured a place in the main tournament. Later, a match with the Ukrainian team (11th), which lost to Turkey 16:20 in the first game, is scheduled. The winners of the qualification group will enter the main tournament, where the Lithuanian national team and the Dusseldorf team are already waiting in group C.
In the previous stage, which took place last week in Fribourg, Switzerland, the Latvian women fought from the qualification to the semi-finals. In Pristina, Anete Šteinberga and Marta Leimane do not start from this line-up, instead they are Luize Šepte and Marta Mishčenko.
The Latvian national team will also participate in the next stage in Bordeaux on July 19 and 20. The FIBA 3×3 World Series calendar includes 22 rounds, as well as the final tournament in Ulaanbaatar. 34 teams have participated in the ten rounds that have already taken place.
In the World Series tournaments, the participants fight for a prize fund of 35,000 US dollars, cash prizes are awarded to the six first-place winners, as well as FIBA rating points, which will be of great importance in distributing tickets to the Paris Olympic Games and Olympic qualification tournaments.
The Latvian women’s national team made its debut in the FIBA World Series in 2022, when different teams competed in tournaments in the French cities of Poitiers (11th place) and Bordeaux (8th place), as well as in the Romanian capital Bucharest (8th place) and the Canadian city of Montreal (10th place). place).
