Cross paths on the AAU Circuit

Despite growing up in different states, Curry and Durant hark back to their youth, first interbreeding on the AAU circuit.

It’s fun to think of NBA stars as a couple of 10-year-olds going for it, as Durant recalled in 2014.

“I was about 10 and our AAU team went to Charlotte to play,” Durant said. “I thought it was white. It was this yellow guy, right? I’m just real now, right? Where I’m from, in the hood, we don’t see that. We don’t see the light-skinned guys around. They were all kids like me.

“I walk into the gym and this guy is running through midcourt just shooting jump shots. Sketches. Sketches. And when we played him, he was like 35 and he was like 10 years old. I was like, who is this?

“10 years later, that was Steph Curry.”

Even then Curry was pulling up from deep inside and lighting up the scoreboard.

Fast forward nearly a decade, Durant entered the league as the No. 1 pick. 2 in the 2007 NBA Draft. Curry joined him as he was selected with the No. 2 pick. 7 in the 2009 NBA Draft.
