The overflowing joy among the fans for the victory of Pello Bilbao from Biscay in the tenth stage of the Tower of France, almost five years and a hundred stages after the last one of a Spanish cyclist in the gala round, ended with a good part of them upset. The reason was the editing of the message with which the race account initially celebrated this victory on Twitter.
Accompanying the video of the recital that the cyclist from Bahrain starred in the stage that ended in the volcanic Issoire, the official profile of the Tour placed a huge Spanish flag made with emoticons. A tribute to a country with a long and victorious tradition in the ‘Grande Boucle’, but which has not won a stage since it did Omar Fraile in Mende in 2018.
However, barely an hour later the tweet was edited and the flag of Spain was replaced by that of the Basque Country. Perhaps it was a tribute to the origin of the Guernica runner or to the beginning of this edition in the Basque lands, but the truth is that the change was not very well received by many Spanish fans.
