The silverside border | weekend

The behavior of living beings is modified to the beat of climate change. And of course there is a lot of truth in this, since a water that does not finish cooling even well into May does not seem a good omen for a species that loves cool environments like silversides. This species seems to go against the calendar with its late ascent to the Uruguay River, a classic route in its reproductive migration that usually gives the season’s start bell, even long before the species establishes itself on the Buenos Aires side of the Río de la Plata.

It is that at the beginning of the autumn, normally, in its migration from the estuary border following certain wedges of salt water that present a different density to the fresh water provided by the coastal rivers, the pejerrey turns to Uruguayan coasts before to the murky waters of Buenos Aires and porteñas that receive the reddish contribution of the Bermejo more or less from the end of February to May, dyeing the river the color of a lion a very typical reddish brown that only begins to mitigate with the first frosts that send down that sedimentary contribution. Something that this year took time to happen. Therefore, the presence of peje in the Uruguay River was eagerly awaited, where summer species such as dorado, manduva and manduví, small chafalotes and the well-known leather species, which are very active, continued to be fished until well into autumn. .

The big ones are coming

But, finally, the awaited call was given by the guide Alex Alvarez, a porteño who chose to settle in Villa Paranacito looking for an air of tranquility. “They are coming in, there are not so many coming out but they are big,” he warned. It was what we expected to hear.

The route from CABA is pleasant, by Panamericana until the detour to the route of the bridges, where after stopping to pick up baits before the Guazú we continue until Km 150 of Route 12. There we turn to the right until Villa Paranacito along the almost complete road of asphalt (there are about 5 km that were left unfinished for years, a real shame). Before entering the town we arrive at the Top Maló complex, the starting point of our excursion. The guide’s boat, a 6.40-meter well-motorized hull, looked radiant and neat, a first impression that is always welcome and reflects the dedication of his employer, a young boy who wants to grow in the trade who -despite being the new one from the neighborhood in the region– showed great skill to take us to the most profitable area.

“noisy” buoys

Sailing out to the Uruguay River, through the La Tinta or Brazo Largo streams, is always a separate gift, full of combinations of green with ocher tints from trees such as taxodium; with birds in bulk such as herons, kingfishers, Benteveos and other wonders. Finally, the majestic Uruguay River opens, the silverside highway in this area of southern Entre Ríos, with an enormous distance between banks that, however, finds the deep water channel –border between countries– much closer to Uruguayan coasts than to Argentine.

For this reason, after navigating downstream, we started our attempts a few meters from Charrúa lands, contemplating the monument to the 33 Orientales, a little above Nueva Palmira. There, after setting up the baiting lane, together with my partner Sergio Gordusenko and the guide, we set out lines into the water consisting of a rig with two buoys (in my case with an attractor or rattlin) and a moustached pointer with a double branch line. The removal of one of the buoys on the line had to do with facilitating the maneuverability of the rig and preventing the line (which should normally measure 20 to 40 cm less than the rod length) from becoming too long. Thus, with a short line and well separated buoys, we can carry the silverside to the chest, as the manuals indicate to facilitate its dehooking.

The first captures were not long in coming, showing two constants that were going to be repeated throughout the day: distant pikes and good bearing of silversides. With the tracing ruler that the guide had attached to the side of his boat, we measured the pieces that did not fall below 37 cm or exceed 42 cm, something typical of the first outpost of adult breeding specimens (about 4 years old) that They anticipate the massive arrival of the schools (something that will happen this month) and that will distribute the sizes much more, which will guarantee greater bite. As the water was not too cold at the time of doing this survey, dorados (now not so small since they were about 35 to 40 cm), chafalotes and superb patíes of about 50 cm were added to the task.

It was key to get the branching length right, something that the moustache favors by making the first branching shorter and the farthest up to 60 cm, finished off with a split ammunition before the hook, number 1/0, preferably incarnate with large mojarras. Another important fact to take into account is the length of the rods. In our case we use 4.20, 4.25 and 4.30 m, a measure that facilitates the handling of long lines and nailing from a distance. The multifilament prevails in these cases, since its zero stretch and buoyancy guarantee us to be able to hook fish that bite at more than 100 meters in many cases.

What’s coming

The interesting thing about this survey was that the pique remained even for most of the day. He loosened up only at 3:00 p.m., shortly before starting the return. And, as we said, in the end and after having measured about 40 silversides, none of them dropped below 35 cm, although we did not achieve kilo monsters either, which there are.

The future risks the massive arrival of large shoals and a fishing that will no longer only take place firmly in the channel (in depths of 4 to 6 meters), but also in the banks, so there will be guaranteed fun with greater breadth. in the offer of sizes. Villa Paranacito, the Argentine Venice, is always a paradise to discover. Go and enjoy good shots of silver arrows in “la frontera del pejerrey”.

QUOTAS AND PERMITS

The quota of silversides that can be slaughtered in Entre Ríos is 25 pieces per fisherman with a fishing permit.
Likewise, it should be noted that although it is incredible at this point in time in which technology is part of our lives, that It cannot be processed via the web, so the visitor must stop at the wildlife post passing the second bridge and get it there, manually. The fishing license as a tourist has 4 days of validity and $ 800 comes out.
