The Rangers are very active in opening the free agent market

A day after seeing his contract bought out by the Winnipeg Jets, forward Blake Wheeler will continue his career with the New York Rangers.

Wheeler agreed to a one-season deal that will earn him a base salary of $800,000, and he could earn $300,000 in bonuses.

On Friday, the Jets made the decision to buy out his five-year contract worth a total of $41.3 million, which he signed with the Winnipeg organization in 2018. Wheeler was due to serve out the final season of his contract, which paid him $8.25 million a year. The 36-year-old forward has spent the past 12 career seasons with the Jets, plus a season with the Atlanta Thrashers before the franchise left for Manitoba.

Last season, the American had 16 goals and 55 points in 72 games. During his National Hockey League career, he banked 312 goals and 922 points.

An experienced goalkeeper comes

Shortly after signing Blake Wheeler, the New York organization announced that it had done the same with veteran goaltender Jonathan Quick, who will earn an annual salary of $825,000 starting next season.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper will be on a third career team. He spent the last 16 seasons with the Los Angeles Kings organization before being traded to the Vegas Golden Knights last season. He also won the Stanley Cup with Vegas.

In 2022-23, he had a 16-15-6 record.
