Marcellina was born in Rome (or, according to other sources, in Trier) to a patrician family around 327 and converted to Christianity in her youth. She was a teacher of faith for her younger brothers, Satyr and Ambrose, especially after the death of her mother. The second would become the famous holy bishop of Milan. On Christmas Day 353, the woman received the virginal veil from Pope Liberius in St. Peter’s in the Vatican.

In 374, when his brother was elected, he moved with him and Satiro to Milan. In the Lombard city Marcellina continued her community life with her companions who had come from Rome. She died in 397, a few months after Ambrose, and was buried in the Ambrosian basilica. In 1838 the Milanese Monsignor Luigi Biraghi founded the female religious institute of the nuns of Santa Marcellina, committed by vocation to the cultural and moral education of female youth.
