The Italian Hope Falls Short: Results from the eFootball Championship Open

The most promising of the Italian players present at the eFootball Championship Open stops in the semifinals.

After five months and numerous qualifying rounds, the best eFootball players from around the world gathered in Tokyo, Japan for the finals of the eFootball Championship Open.
Over the weekend of July 22-23, mobile and console single player battled it out for the title.

After a series of knockout rounds, the Brazilian El_Mysterio and the Japanese UDI conquered the top step of the podium in their respective categories, mobile and console, winning the title of champion and a prize of 10,000 dollars each. After five qualifying rounds, 8 mobile players and 16 console players gathered offline at the Ginza eSports studio in Tokyo to battle it out for the crown of champion.

In the console category, the 16 players were divided into four groups of four, the best player of each group gaining access to the semi-finals: ZEUS_ELGACOR, Zilo, the Italian Francesco “FRANKINO” Siranni (in the Milan esports team ) and the UDI sample. In the final, Japanese player UDI beat Zilo 3-2 in an incredible match.

UDI, commenting on his final, said “Zilo was strong! It was a really difficult match and it was tough when I equalized in the second half. Getting the 3rd goal was incredible, a stroke of luck. I’m really happy that my friends came to cheer me on and I think the level in Japan is very high, so I hope eFootball becomes more and more popular in Japan!”.

In the mobile category, made up of two groups of four players, the first two classified qualified for the semi-finals. El_Mysterio finished second in his group, while LaCasAA took first place. The two met again in the final, where the Brazilian managed to snatch victory and the title thanks to a thrilling penalty kick.

El_Mysterio commented: “I feel super excited, I can’t believe it. I was thinking about so many different things at the time. In the penalties I had to think quickly to decide where to shoot and where to save, luckily I went well and now I’m the champion!”.

How did Italy fare at the eFootball Championship Open?

10 eFootball Championship Pro finalists also competed for individual titles in the PlayStation (console) category, including FC Internazionale’s MeroMen and FRANKINO of AC Milan. Their paths ended respectively at the Group Stage and the semi-finals. The eFootball Championship Open World Finals was live streamed from eSports Ginza studio on the eFootball YouTube channel, amassing over 3 million views.
