The Importance of Speed: Will Jon Jones or Stipe Miocic Prevail in UFC 295?

It’s official, Jon Jones will defend his championship title next November at UFC 295, against Stipe Miocic. The opportunity for MMA specialists to look now at the opposition and according to Daniel Cormier, one detail in particular could determine the winner. A detail that had been lacking in “Bones” against Ciryl Gane…

While Francis Ngannou has just signed a great victory by formalizing his boxing fight against Tyson Fury, the UFC could not sit idly by. Crowned heavyweight champion last March against Ciryl Gane, Jon Jones will therefore defend his title just a few days after the event in question. And he will not face anyone since it is Stipe Miocic who has been designated as his opponent.

From the beginning “Bones” had said he only wanted to face the one he considered to be the heavyweight GOAT and he finally won his case. The question now remains to know which of the two men will end up winning at UFC 295, on the side of New York. For Daniel Cormier, who has long been their rival in the octagon, Jones will have to change his tune compared to his fight against Bon Gamin.

Daniel Cormier’s cash analysis on the Jones vs Miocic clash

Daniel Cormier : When I watched Jon Jones in his fight against Ciryl, he didn’t look as good as usual. He wasn’t as fast, but in this fight he will have to be. Against Jones, even though he’s heavier, I don’t think Miocic needs to be that heavy. I think Miocic just needs to be fit. He has to be fast if he wants to reclaim the heavyweight title of the world.

The outcome of this fight will be determined very soon, at least in my opinion. We will know from the start of the fight whether or not we will see the Stipe Miocic from before or if we will see a slower version of the former champion. What we already know is that we will be entitled to a slightly slower version of Jon Jones. He’s a little different than he was when he was at light heavyweight. No one can look at her fight against Ciryl and think otherwise.

Weighed at nearly 113 kilos before UFC 285, JJ will therefore be more powerful but also slower than his opponent. At least that’s the theory…because as Cormier points out, that’s the complete mystery surrounding Miocic’s form. His fight against Jones will mark the end of a series of 959 days of inactivity, he who had not put on the mittens since a loss by KO against Ngannou in 2021.

Having now passed his forties, the American-Croatian will therefore certainly play his last fight in his career. For DC, it’s clear that without sufficient velocity, he won’t make the cut against Jones:

Daniel Cormier : If he is still fast, he can do the job. But if he’s slowed down, he’s almost 41 I think, if he’s slowed down even a bit, that could be a problem. He can’t be slow. He has to be fast if he wants to get things done.

Ultimately, the outcome of the fight between Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic may come down to speed. If the first has clearly lost in this area by moving up to heavyweight, the second may be lacking even more after being absent for so long. See you on November 11 to get to the bottom of it.
