The Importance of Encouraging Sports and Physical Activity in Children: Tips for Parents

Practicing a physical or sports activity at an early age of growth is one of the fundamental pillars for the development of any person. It is also the most effective way to combat a sedentary lifestyle that can lead to serious health complications and affects more than 58% of Mexicans.

According to data from the Nemours Foundation, which specializes in pediatric health, most children develop the physical skills and attention needed for sports around 6 and 7 years of age. That is why this good habit should be encouraged from a young age.

In Mexico, the most popular sports options to practice among the youngest are: soccer, taekwondo, basketball, swimming, judo, athletics, baseball, among others. So much so, that in Mexico world champions under 14 years of age have emerged in several of these disciplines. Once children fall in love with a sport, the best thing to do as parents is to accompany them in that healthy passion and, if possible, make them adopt it as a lifestyle.

“Building a life project will allow both families and children and adolescents to set real expectations and make the right decisions to help materialize it,” says Laura María Serrano, head of the psychology area at Genuine Digital School.

“It is ideal to establish a good distribution of time so that children and adolescents can adequately enjoy each moment of their lives, which includes the social, family and academic dimensions, rest and recreational leisure”, he added.

That is why she offers us these useful tips for parents who want to accompany their daughters and sons on the path of sport and develop their process in the best way:

Build their confidence and self-esteem by praising their efforts and accomplishments, not just their results.

Help him develop a growth mindset by teaching him to learn from his mistakes and face challenges positively.

Provide him with a supportive and understanding environment, where he is allowed to discuss his feelings and concerns related to sport.

Encourage a healthy balance between sport and other activities (friendships, fun, family, education, and social relationships), to prevent you from burning out physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Help him develop communication and leadership skills, essential for success in high-performance sport.

Teach him to take a long-term perspective and prepare for a career or a life after sports.

“It is advisable that parents look for a school that has the ideal tools, processes, content, and methodology for the growth of each student, but that also includes alternatives that enhance extracurricular skills, such as sports, so that in these cases, a virtual school that allows access from anywhere and the flexibility to carry out all kinds of activities at different times could be the best option”, concludes Serrano.
