The Gigantes del Cibao Announce Triple Player Acquisition in Bid to Strengthen Roster

The Gigantes del Cibao announced this Friday the acquisition of the players Erick Mejía, Diego Hernández and Alex de Jesús in a triple change in which the Toros del Este and the Estrellas Orientales participated.

In this move, in which they seek to strengthen their roster for the Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League season, the Giants sent outfielder Luis Liberato and Utility Rafael Lantigua to the Bulls, while the Stars kept Vidal Bruján, who comes from the Bulls, and the Giants’ pick 12 for the next Lidom rookie draw.

The general manager of the Giants, the Colombian Luis -Pipe- Urueta, spoke of the value of the new players of the club, based in San Francisco de Macorís, due to their price in the United States and highlighted the arrival of an experienced player like Mejía.

“Diego (Hernández) is a center fielder with immediate hitting and baserunning skills on our team,” Urueta said.

Regarding De Jesús, the manager of San Francisco de Macorís (northeast) pointed out that he is projected as an inner field player with power in his bat, which can contribute, in the near future, to the success of the team.

“He is a young man with a great desire to succeed who has the tools to achieve great things,” said Urueta.

About Mejía, who has already worn the uniforms of the Águilas Cibaeñas, Tigres del Licey and Estrellas, Urueta highlighted the versatility that he brings to the field with his style of play.

“I’ve always liked him as a player, he’s one of the best utility players in the league and always available to contribute,” said the Colombian executive.

Hernández has been designated by Baseball America as the Best Defensive Outfielder in the minor league system of the Kansas City Royals, a team to which he belongs in the Major Leagues.

The left-handed batting outfielder, at 22, is at the Double-A level of the Royals, where he has a .290 batting average and a .372 on-base percentage.

De Jesús is a 21-year-old shortstop who hits right and belongs to the Toronto Blue Jays, batting for a .252 average with 53 RBIs, 10 home runs and four steals in Class A+.

Mejía, 28, is in the Triple A Washington Nationals, where he is batting .248 with 16 runs scored, four home runs, and 17 RBIs in 113 at-bats.
