A festival of goals. The Germans kicked off their World Cup in Australia and New Zealand with a 6-0 victory over Morocco – finalists in the last Africa Cup of Nations in 2022 – on Monday (July 24) at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, in the first match of Group H.

Strengthened by this victory, the Germans temporarily take the lead of their group.

German domination, Moroccan thrust

The start of the game saw the two teams fight for possession. But the Germans are quick to open the scoring and unlock the game. In the 11th minute, following a poor recovery from the Moroccan defence, the ball was recovered and passed to the right side. A center from Kathrin Hendrich arrives on the head of Alexandra Popp, who concludes. Moroccan goalkeeper Khadija Er-Rmichi cannot take over the center. A goal to nil for Germany.

The Atlas Lionesses are not discouraged, like Ghizlaine Chebbak. Shortly after the twentieth minute of play, the n°7 and Moroccan captain took her chance from afar with a powerful shot from the right foot. But the ball is picked up by the goalkeeper of the Frauen-Nationalmannschaft.

The Germans are close to doubling the lead in the 33rd minute. Sara Daebritz is alone in front of the Moroccan goalkeeper and slips the ball into the back of the net with a stung ball. But an offside position is signalled. The German players doubled the lead in the 39th minute, once again through Alexandra Popp, who scored twice from a corner.

The Moroccans are quick to react, and infiltrate the defense of the Frauen-Nationalmannschaft. In the 41st minute, Fatima Tagnaout is close to scoring the first Moroccan goal in this World Cup. But the German defense watches and an offside is reported. The Germans lead 2 goals to 0 at halftime.

The Germans drive the point home

The second half begins with…a third German goal. In the first seconds, Klara Bühl comes to conclude an action from the right side.

The Frauen-Nationalmannschaft is, in stride, close to scoring its fourth goal, via, once again, Klara Bühl in the 49th minute. But his attempt crashes on the post and an offside position is signaled.

Despite the German lead, the Moroccans stay in the game and push to come back. Ghizlaine Chebbak takes her chance in the 51st minute, but the ball is captured by Merle Frohms. The Moroccans then believe to score their first goal in the 53rd minute by Anissa Lahmari, who slips a curled shot into the German top corner, but an offside is whistled.

The Atlas Lionesses then conceded a fourth and a fifth goal, in the 54th and 78th minute, by two own goals.

The Germans scored a sixth goal signed by the n°7: Lea Schüller, who concluded a movement from the right side in the 90th minute. The latter believes to register a double – a seventh goal – from the head in the 96th minute. But the flag goes up: offside.

The situation will no longer change. The Germans have surpassed the Japanese who scored five goals in their opener against Zambia last Saturday. Germany takes the lead in Group H. The second match of the group will take place on Tuesday July 25, at 4 am (Paris time) between Colombia and South Korea. It will take place at the Sydney Football Stadium.
