The first matchdays of the second division have fixed dates. Hansa doctor Dr. Frank Bartel (63) has one game in particular in mind: Sunday, September 3rd, away game at Hamburger SV. “This will be my farewell, I’m looking forward to it. The Volkspark is my favorite stadium.”
Taking leave? Doc Bartel is leaving Hansa after more than three decades!
The two main reasons: Bartel had a complicated inflammation of the spine (spondylitis) a year and a half ago. To this day he is not free of pain and walking is difficult for him. “In addition, my parents in Halberstadt are at an age when they need more support. I want to take my time.”

The Bartel era began in 1991 – by Juri Schlünz (61). The surgeon and pain therapist: “I got him well again quickly after an injury. He was captain, word got around in the cabin. And a little later coach Uwe Reinders called to ask if I would like to be a team doctor.”
Doc Bartel has experienced everything with Hansa: victories in the Bundesliga, bankruptcies in the third division. His highlights: “The promotions with Pagel, of course Bochum…”
In the legendary 3-2 on the last day of the game in 1999 (which brought them up in the league), striker Oliver Neuville injured his left ear badly – Bartel gave him a thick turban, and goalscorer Neuville lasted 90 minutes.
The tough guys from before: “Rade Prica once broke his big toe, had injections every morning for six weeks – because he really wanted to play.”

What will also be missing with Bartel: his pithy sayings (“I know Paule Beinlich’s body better than his wife”). During the chaos flight in Tehran in 2008, he had to be taken into custody because he was cheeky with the authorities, and he received various warnings from referees on the bench.
