The final phase of the fifth stage in the Giro Donne was shocked by two crashes yesterday. Both leader Annemiek van Vleuten and Elisa Longo Borghini tumbled off their bicycles. The Giro is also over for the latter.

The fall of Elisa Longo Borghini in particular looked painful. The Italian dived completely into the side. Not without damage and some loss of time, she climbed back on the bike. Her teammate Shirin van Anrooij accompanied her across the finish line. Longo Borghini was allowed to put away her classification ambitions immediately after the stage, because she tumbled out of the top ten.
The Italian champion must eventually also leave the Giro Donne. Examination in the hospital immediately after the crash revealed no very serious injuries, such as fractures, but the next day she is in too much pain to continue her journey.
“She had a good night and this morning’s checks show no signs of a concussion,” her team said in an update. “However, she is still in significant pain and so the team believes it is the right decision not to start today’s stage of the Giro Donne.”

Van Vleuten also to the ground
Just before Longo Borghini dived to the side, Annemiek van Vleuten also made a painful fall. In the descent towards the finish, the Dutch rider missed a turn and ended up in the grass. Van Vleuten was able to continue quickly despite the small delay and eventually came in second. The German Antonia Niedermaier managed to complete a flight and arrived solo.
Annemiek van Vleuten remains leader in the general classification thanks to her second place. Niedermaier is the first to follow already at 2’07”. Four other stages will follow in this Giro Donne. Today’s sixth stage takes the riders over 104.4 kilometers in and around Canelli.
