The Controversial Hug: A Closer Look at Pino and Massa’s Embrace in La Rural

The hug between Pino and Massa in La Rural

The president of the Argentine Rural Society, Nicolás Pino, clarified the scope of a hug that he carried out with the Minister of Economy, Sergio Massa, last week, when the official participated as presidential candidate in a meeting organized by the agricultural entity to know the proposals of the leaders who intend to reach the Casa Rosada.

The image, captured with a cell phone, went viral and generated anger in part of the rural leadership, historically in conflict with Kirchnerism, today allied with Massa in the middle of the electoral race.

When interviewed by Eduardo Feinmann on radio Miter, Pino assured: “I don’t know Massa that well, I’m not a friend, I don’t know how he reacts to these things.”

And he elaborated: “The hug was given in the framework of a lunch, the day of the visit of the candidates for President to the Rural, after a round trip he grabbed me by the neck and gave me a hug.”

The businessman considered that “a lot of trouble” was created because of the image, but the important thing is that five candidates for President, including the representative of the ruling party, were in the traditional agricultural venue to talk about their proposals.

“I highly appreciate that the minister has come to La Rural, it’s been years since a Kirchner official hasn’t come,” he stressed.

Massa presented his plans for the sector in a day in which the candidates for the Presidency Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, Patricia Bullrich, Juan Schiaretti and Javier Milei also participated.

Pino was the protagonist on Saturday of a strong speech at the inauguration of the annual exhibition of the Rural Society that, beyond its name, functions as the closing day of the fair. The agricultural leader spoke of corruption, clientelism, nepotism and voter manipulation.

“The problem of the field that usually occupies the headlines now is the drought. And it is true, the drought marked us strongly. But the most important thing is that it exposes the terrible agricultural policies that governments have implemented in Argentina in the last 80 years. We all pay for those bad policies. Our production is stagnant, blocked, weakened and, if the tax and macroeconomic conditions changed, we could produce much more”, added Pino.

Although his presence had been announced, the Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Juan José Bahillo, did not attend the inauguration of the Rural Expo and Pino’s speech, which was followed by several opposition leaders and candidates, such as the head of Government Rodríguez Larreta and his opponent in the internal Bullrich.
