A very special hegemony in such a particular event. Wimbledon, the most traditional of the Grand Slams, with its grass and its unique stamp, only had four singles champions in the last 19 editions. Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray are the chosen ones, who shared the biggest trophy in La Catedral since 2003. Only it was not played in London in 2020, canceled by the Covid.

Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray shared Wimbledon since 2003.ESPN.com.

The select batch known as the ‘Big 4’ had the luxury of being champions at The Cathedral, in London, without the irruption of another colleague since 2003, precisely when one of them achieved his first Major. That time, Federer claimed the first of his 20 Grand Slams and began this unforgettable era in the history of the sport. And the question remains as to whether another would have won in 2020, the edition suspended due to the pandemic.

Although the parchments and marks of Federer, Djokovic and Nadal are already clearly superior to Murray, the Scotsman must be highly valued. Much reference is made to the ‘Big 3’ and it is logical, but only Murray was able to obtain, in the history of Olympic tennis, two gold medals in singles. The Scotsman was the first Briton to win Wimbledon in 77 years, since the Fred Perry era.

For this reason, they add 19 consecutive editions of Wimbledon with a champion that does not come out of that quartet. The Serbian reached four titles in a row in London and a total of seven, to be one away from the all-time record of eight held by Federer. Precisely, the Swiss retired from the professional circuit in September 2022.

Federer leads the men’s record on the lawn of the London All England Club at the time with eight cups, followed by Djokovic and the American Pete Sampras, with seven. Meanwhile, the Spanish and the Scottish won twice.

It would be necessary to see what would have happened if Wimbledon was held in 2020, when the London tournament was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Although, it is probable that one of them would have added another feat in that championship.
